WADADA WAFANYA KWELI MAPUTO


The national netball team ‘Taifa Queens’ have done the country proud by winning a silver medal at the ongoing All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique after beating Botswana 43-35 yesterday.
The Botswana game results mean Taifa Queens, who competed in the Games for the first time, emerged on second behind gold medal winners Uganda.
Zambia won a bronze medal followed by South African who finished fourth.
On the way to return home with the medal, the Queens won six matches out of eight.
They beat Kenya 36-35, Ghana 94-24, hosts Mozambique 92-8, Zimbabwe 38-27 and South Africa 32-29.
The ladies lost two matches on the way, against Zambia 46-42 and current champions Uganda 52-41.
The national netball association (CHANETA) secretary general, Rose Mkisi, said Taifa Queens have every reasons to be welcomed home as heroes after winning the medal at their maiden appearance in the Games.
She said the Games have also helped the country to gain experience and confidence to continue competing in international tournaments.
"We lost two games against Zambia and Uganda with a very small margin, but am very happy that the team has won silver medal at its first appearance in All Africa Games," she said.
She also asked all Tanzanians to celebrate the team’s victory due to the national team’s performances
